What
to bring to the program |
 |
| |
|
|
| |
| Academics:
|
| |
- Sufficient
paper, pens, pencils, pocket calculator to last you for the entire
program. We suggest that you bring 1-2 notebooks for each course,
and a separate ream of plain copy paper for printing (printing
paper 12 week program only). All of these items are heavy, especially
the printing paper so you may also consider purchasing them in
Dominica. Time will be allocated for this during the orientation.
- Laptop
computers are optional. During "crunch time", a personal computer
is very advantageous. There is a computer and printer available
for general use.
- TEXTS
(e.g. Organism ID books, refer to updates received prior to the
program).
- Pencils
for your dive slate, duct tape for small repairs, Ajax or similar
cleaner to clean dive slate. (These items can also be purchased
in Dominica).

| |
| Clothing:
|
| |
| Try
to travel light, and pack for a humid tropical country, where
you will dress casually most of the time, yet need formal attire on
occasion. |
| |
- Sneakers
for light hiking/jogging, hiking boots (previously broken in)
for strenuous hikes, and flip-flops or canvas tennis shoes to
wear around the institute.
- 2
long-sleeved, lightweight shirts, for sun protection.
- Long
pants-at least one pair. Cotton blend are most appropriate since
they are lightweight and dry quickly (unlike blue jeans).
- Shorts,
t-shirts, sun dresses, socks and underwear-one week's worth.
- Two
lightweight shirts and slacks / dresses / skirts for evening wear.
Most Dominicans dress casually and informally, but remember that
you may want appropriate attire for more formal occasions or presentations.
|
| |
| Room,
Bed, Bath: |
| |
- US
$ 50 room & key deposit.
- 2-3
towels.
- Sheets
for a twin-sized bed and pillowcases.
- Mosquito
netting. (This item will be essential to your sleeping comfort
and is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED! Round models are easier to set up
than rectangular ones.)
- Bathing
suits and sunny weather gear, sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, etc.
|
| |
| Equipment
that you MUST have: |
| |
- Mask
(with prescription lenses if needed).
- Fins,
with straps, sized to fit over booties.
- Snorkel,
plain J-tube. Avoid fancy snorkels with valves.
- Hard-soled
diving booties.
- Large,
underwater writing slate, sized 8 1/2" x 11". (This
is your most essential research tool. Do not
come without it! Bring 2 so you can continue you
work if one gets lost.) YOU CAN'T BUY THIS IN DOMINICA
|
| |
| Equipment
that you MUST have IF you intend to use SCUBA: |
| |
- Primary
and secondary "octopus" regulators.
- Submersible
pressure gauge.
- Depth
gauge.
- BC
- buoyancy compensator. (can be rented).
- Spare
parts such as O rings, straps, mouth pieces, belt buckles etc.
- NOTE:
There is no need to buy or bring a dive computer. It is ITME's
SCUBA policy that all dives are planned and executed according
to dive tables.
|
| |
|
Optional snorkeling and SCUBA equipment: |
| |
- Full
wetsuit--3mm or higher. Due to the high number of jellyfish than
can be present in Dominica's waters, and the lengthy times spent
in the water conducting research, this item is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
- Dive
light for night snorkels / dives.
- Mesh
dive bag, Dive knife, Waterproof box to hold glasses etc. while
in the water.
